St. Lucia Tourism Minister: After tourists get killed and raped, St. Lucia is relatively safe

Almasalla Arab Travel Portal News – After deadly crimes including murder and rape against foreign tourists on St. Lucia in the Caribbean, the Tourism Minister Theophilus stressed that the island remained a "relatively safe" place to visit.

St. Lucia authorities identified the tourist killed as Roger Pratt and said his wife was injured during the attack late Friday. Police did not say how the killing occurred, and it is unclear whether other people were aboard the boat. No one has been arrested, and the investigation is ongoing.

A 62-year-old British tourist has been killed aboard a boat near the eastern Caribbean island of St. Lucia, according to police.

Authorities said the boat was anchored near the city of Vieux Forte in the island’s southern region.

Tourism Minister Lorne Theophilus said Pratt’s wife is recovering from the attack. No further information was released, and police on Saturday did not return calls for comment.

The killing comes amid an increase in violent crime on St. Lucia that authorities have blamed on drug trafficking. However, police reported 34 killings last year, the lowest number in four years. Among those killed was a 75-year-old Canadian tourist who was attacked in November 2012 while he walked with his wife on a beach near the airport.

In 2011, St. Lucia police said two British women were raped and a Danish woman was shot in front of her husband and friends in separate incidents.
