Police called to airport to calm angry passengers

Almasalla Travel News – Police were called to Manchester Airport after hundreds of arriving passengers grew angry at being forced to wait more than two hours for their luggage in the early hours of the morning.

The airport claimed the delays were caused when four flights landed within minutes of each other at Terminal One last Friday night.

The first of three Jet2 flights landed at 23:40hrs but passengers were forced to wait until 01.50hrs for their bags.

The last flight, operated by easyJet, landed at 01.30hrs but the bags didn’t arrive on the airport carousel until 02.38hrs.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, one holidaymaker was so incensed he walked along a stationary baggage carousel to try to get access to bags through shutter doors, while many others also grew angry, prompting police to attend the scene. No arrests were made.

Manchester Airport said baggage agents Menzies Aviation were faced with an unusually high volume of bags due to the four flights unexpectedly landing at similar times as some were delayed.

A spokesman added: "By the conditions of the ground handling licence, the airport has measures that it can take to improve the performance of handling agents based at Manchester Airport.

"We will continue to work alongside agents in order to ensure that the operation of the airport runs smoothly during the summer period."
