South Africa confirms their second delegation for the Carnival International de Victoria in Seychelles at the end of April

Almasalla Arab Travel Portal News – South Africa has confirmed their second delegation for the end of April carnival in Seychelles. The 2014 edition of the Carnaval International de Victoria is being jointly co-hosted by Seychelles, La Reunion, Madagascar, Mayotte and South Africa KwaZulu Natal. South Africa will see KwaZulu Natal showcasing their own diversity and culture in this carnival that they themselves are co-hosting, but today confirmation has also been received that The Cape Minstrel Carnival from Cape Town will also be flying to Seychelles to fly the South African Flag in this unique carnival of carnivals.

The Cape Minstrel Carnival is Cape Town’s longest-running street party, tracing back to old slave traditions during the days of the Cape Colony. Historically this Cape Ton Carnival is celebrated on January 2, the one day Cape slaves were given off every year, the carnival is still marked today by merrymaking, music and a parade. Tens of thousands of Capetonians take to the streets in brightly coloured satin and sequined uniforms, waving umbrellas, blowing whistles and dancing to the beat of their Ghoema’s ( ethnic drums and brass bands )

Legend has it that the carnival was influenced by a group of African-American musicians who docked in Cape Town in the late 1800s and entertained sailors with their spontaneous performances. Many tunes you will hear played during the parade are more than 200 years old, although you’re sure to hear pop songs and local interpretations of modern music too. The minstrel troupes involved take the event very seriously – some start practicing up to ten months in advance. There is also a minstrel competition with prizes for the most flamboyant drum major performance, the best-dressed troupe, the best singer and the best band and much more.

The Cape Minstrel Carnival, much like Mardi Gras, is a celebration of freedom and an expression of unique culture – and a people’s pride in that culture. The carnival is a platform for beautiful expression of a unique people, its passions and its rich history.

The carnival in Seychelles has established itself as event where various countries are invited to display their culture, their passion and their people.  As participants parade through the streets of Victoria, the world is their stage. And here, the vibrant Cape Town minstrels will again this year bring their unique flavour and sounds to the Seychelles.

Through Midea Promotions, the Cape Town Minstrels have been performing at the Seychelles carnival for the past three years. These same minstrels have also been a part of the minstrel carnival in Cape Town. Midea Director, Kader Miller sees immense value in the sharing of cultures and traditions “The Seychelles has become the premium multi – cultural carnival to be a part of. The beauty of the island and the warmth and friendliness of its people – is completely alluring – and makes us return year after year.” Kader Miller said.
