WFP TO ANNOUNCE ARAB FILM STAR HEND SABRY AMBASSADOR AGAINST HUNGER

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) will announce the appointment of Tunisian Film star Hend Sabry as an “Ambassador against Hunger” on Tuesday January 12, 2010 at the Semiramis Intercontinental Hotel in Cairo.

Ms. Sabry will assume her new function as the new Ambassador against Hunger with WFP to help the agency in its fight against hunger by raising awareness on nutrition and hunger issues. In 2009 the compounding effects of the economic crisis that followed the 2008 high food price crisis, pushed the number of hungry people to unprecedented levels with more than one billion people around the world going hungry each day.

The widely-acclaimed film star has been supporting WFP since February 2009, and travelled to Syria and the occupied Palestinian territory, visiting WFP beneficiaries to see first-hand the impact that food assistance has on the lives of the most vulnerable. Ms. Sabri will be joining forces with Egyptian film veteran, Mahmoud Yassin, WFP’s Ambassador Against Hunger since 2004.

The event will start at 7:30 with a press conference by Hend Sabri and WFP Deputy Regional Director for the Middle East, Central Asia and Eastern Europe open to all journalists and media organizations and followed by a reception at 8:30 by invitation only.
