Sherif Fathy, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, participated in the roundtable held at the Prince Mohamed Ali Palace Museum in Manial, marking the conclusion of the project “Heritage Universities Forum – Historic Cairo: A Case Study.”
The event brought together researchers, university professors, postgraduate students and heritage experts for an in-depth discussion on the scientific outcomes and policy recommendations of the initiative.
During the roundtable, the Minister engaged in extensive and insightful dialogue with participants, focusing on strategies to safeguard Historic Cairo and enhance its archaeological and touristic sites. The discussions highlighted proposals aimed at improving the visitor experience, supporting surrounding communities, and ensuring the long-term preservation of the site’s unique cultural heritage.
Fathy expressed his appreciation to UNESCO, represented by Dr. Nuria Sanz, Director of the Regional Office in Cairo, for its leading role in organizing the project in cooperation with the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA). He commended the efforts of the participating academic institutions, researchers, professionals and postgraduate students, who presented a series of inspiring models and innovative proposals for the revitalization of Historic Cairo.

“This initiative represents a critical step toward a more sustainable and inclusive future for one of the world’s most iconic heritage sites,” H.E. Fathy noted, emphasizing the importance of translating academic insights into practical solutions.
As a key outcome of the roundtable, it was agreed that a follow-up meeting will be convened with all project stakeholders—including representatives from relevant government bodies—to establish a roadmap for implementing the proposed recommendations. The discussions will also prioritize mechanisms for mobilizing the necessary human and financial resources.
The project is part of ongoing collaboration between the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, represented by the SCA, and UNESCO’s Regional Office in Cairo. It aims to develop an integrated management and conservation plan for Historic Cairo, which has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979. The plan will seek to preserve the site’s Outstanding Universal Value and address contemporary urban and conservation challenges.
