meeting the challenges of climate change

IIPT panel at World Travel Market:

Cairo "Almasalla News" — Four prominent international experts will come together on a panel at World Travel Market to discuss the challenges of climate change to tourism and present leading models of best practice. The panel will be moderated by the International Institute for Peace Through Tourism (IIPT) Founder and President, Louis D’Amore, and will feature:

Geoffrey Lipman, FTS, Director, greenearth.travel and Advisor to Secretary-General UNWTO, and President ICTP (International Council of Tourism Partners)

– Alain St. Ange, CEO, Seychelles Tourism Board

– Dr. Murray Simpson, Co-Director and CEO, CARIBSAVE Partnership, and Oxford University Centre for the Environment

– Max Haberstroh, International Tourism Consultant

Members of the panel will share their knowledge, experience, and best practices in meeting the challenges of climate change to tourism. Discussions will span from global perspectives to the experience of the Caribbean region and the Indian Ocean islands of the Seychelles in mitigating and adapting to climate change.

The panel will be conducted from 1400 to1500 hours on November 8, 2011 in the North Gallery, Room 9. Two special announcements will also be made at this session.

Both the Seychelles and Caribbean regions are heavily dependent on tourism – and both are most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change including sea level rise, biodiversity loss, and impacts on human health.

Members of the panel will discuss how they have worked with stakeholders to address the impacts of climate change on the environment, economic development, tourism, and community livelihoods using holistic approaches to provide practical strategies and capacity building. The session will also provide a perspective on the natural marriage of tourism and the various forms of solar energy as a response to climate change and in shaping sustainable tourism development.

This panel follows from the successful 5th IIPT African Conference on “Meeting the Challenges of Climate Change to Tourism in Africa and the Developing World” recently held in Lusaka, Zambia. The Lusaka Declaration was one of the outcomes of that conference.
