Julia Morin, the Executive Secretary of the “Preserve Seychelles” Association has confirmed that they will hold a Press Conference to state its position on the construction of a base on Assomption Island, in regards to the latest statement by the Indian High Commissioner; made on Wednesday 17th October at an event dubbed ‘India and its Indian Ocean Policy’ .

The India High Commissioner accredited to Seychelles made revealing announcements in the “News Extra” program on SBC, which followed his address at the said event.

The Seychelles is an Independent Sovereign Country, its people cannot be informed of strategic military developments plans, by the High Commissioner of another country.

The stand by “Preserve Seychelles” will be presented at a Press Conference on 12th November (9.30am) at Room 2 ICCS.

Seychelles is going through an unstable phase politically and its Independence attained from Great Britain on the 29 June 1976 must be preserved and defended at all cost by the natives and all Seychellois, no matter where they are in the world. No part of the Seychelles can be given to any foreign Government for military purposes to be managed or for joint management with Seychelles without first seeking the approval of the People of Seychelles.

The Assomption Island is critical for the continued preservation of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Aldabra, and it cannot have a “Mother of All Airports” constructed on it nor can it have any foreign military power base operating from there; with submarines and Navy Ships in the 21 mile channel with Aldabra. This situation will contribute in making the Aldabra Island Group a zone of conflict.

We are inviting the National Press to cover the event and all stakeholders to be present to hear the people’s side of the argument on why we don’t need a military facility on the Assomption Island.
