Abu Dhabi – In a historic achievement, the UAE’s Sheikha Nasser Al Nuaisi has been elected Secretary-General of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) for the 2026–2029 term, becoming the first woman ever to hold this position since the organization’s establishment in 1975.

The election took place at UN Tourism headquarters in Madrid, with 35 member states participating. The UAE received widespread international praise for its contributions to global tourism growth and sustainable development.

Sheikha Al Nuaisi dedicated the milestone to the UAE’s visionary leadership, emphasizing her ambition to lead a global tourism transformation through sustainable, inclusive, and innovation-driven strategies. Her five-pillar vision focuses on responsible tourism, youth and women empowerment, digital innovation, smart financing, and transparent governance.

With over 15 years of experience in tourism and hospitality, she has held executive roles, shaped policy, and fostered public-private collaboration. She has also earned regional and international recognition, including awards from Business Traveller Middle East, Business Traveller UK, and Forbes Middle East’s 100 Most Sustainable Companies in 2023.
