Seychelles confirms that the first-time carnival on the island of La Digue was a real hit
Almasalla,Gate Arab Tourism News- Vibrant colours, rhythmic and pulsating music, young and old dancing on the road at La Passe were all added to the carnival frenzy on La Digue island recently.
The La Digue carnival, an innovative first for the island, was part of the Feast of the Assumption celebrations during the weekend of August 15-17.
Six colourful floats, each depicting their own themes paraded the road leading up to La Passe where members of the jury were waiting to see the floats.
A crowd of onlookers, young and old alike, visitors and locals had all gathered where the Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation’s had set up their stand for the La Digue roadshow.
Ox-carts, which is unique traditional means of transport on the island of La Digue, was used as part of the carnival parade.
Slavery, traditional wedding, fairy tale stories and moutia and other local beats were among the aspects being shown in the parade.
The part which amused bystanders was when the first ox-cart in the float had stopped as the bull had refused to move for minutes, even with efforts from its driver to get it moving. Bye-standers were all laughing at this vehicle breakdown which all added to the carnival fun and laughter.
The first three winners of the island’s carnival were awarded their prizes during the closing ceremony of the three-day event. The La Digue carnival was aninitiative of the La Digue District Committee which was supported by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture.
