Sharjah Tourist Guide Training & Licensing Programme to kick off this month

Following a comprehensive research campaign and the subsequent compilation of a training programme, Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) is set to open its new training and licensing programme for tourist guides and tour operators in the emirate later this month. The official opening of the programme will coincide with the World Guiding Day on 21 February.

The SCTDA has partnered with leading training institute, Sharjah Skyline College to present the programme, which is aimed at setting the standard of operation for tourist guides within the emirate.

Director General of the SCTDA, Mohamed A. Al Noman, said of the programme, “This initiative is the first of its kind in the UAE and follows an in-depth study of tourism agencies and tourist guides’ practices within the emirate. It offers a unique mix of master classes and field visits conducted by experts.”
Our analysis of this study led us to the subsequent conclusion that a standardized operating basis is needed in order to ensure that Sharjah continues to enjoy its status as a world class tourist destination. The programme we have worked out and will now be offered in conjunction with Skyline College aims to address this need and provide a benchmark for tour operator practices in Sharjah The course has been divided into two levels – one for beginners looking to start up as tourist guides, and one for experienced guides who have been conducting tours in the region for some time

Until now, tourist guides and operators have not been required to hold licenses in order to operate. Once the SCTDA’s training and licensing programme is fully underway, however, tourist guides will be required to obtain licenses in order to be able to conduct tours in the emirate.

The SCTDA’s approach to promoting Sharjah both locally and abroad has entailed a great many festivals, shopping promotions, family-friendly events and gatherings and infrastructural and service-related improvements on an ongoing basis. The training and licensing of tourist guides in the emirate forms part of the Authority’s strategy for maintaining world class standards throughout its tourism sector, which includes ensuring that tour operators and guides are equipped with a comprehensive knowledge of the emirate, its neighbouring regions and all of the attractions on offer therein.

As an added incentive, applicants who sign up for the programme in February will receive a 50% discount on the standard fees. Interested parties should contact either the SCTDA or Skyline College directly for details on course dates and fees.
