The Ministry of Culture completed a project for restoration and development of Sultan Qalawon Monumental group that is manifested in the jewel of Al-Moez Ledin Allah Al-Fatimi Street, at Cairo Historical District. The site became ready for welcoming the Egyptian and foreign visitors in a great inaugural ceremony next week to be attended by Minister of Culture Farouq Hosny and a number of officials.
The Minister said that the project that lasted 7 years with a total cost of L.E. 20 Million within the framework of the integrated project implemented by the Ministry at Cairo Historical District for rescue and restoration of 33 rare monuments at Al-Moez Ledin Allah Al-Fatimi street with development of the street and preparing it to become an open museum for monuments.
He highlighted the organization of a great celebration by the end of this year of returning the Cairo Historical District to its old times and glamour to be the largest open museum for the Islamic monuments in the world.
On his part the Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Antiquities Dr. Zahi Hawas said that the group of Sultan Qalawon represents a unique type of design as the building contained a school, tomb, and Bimarstan combined around main nerve that is called the grand corridor.
This group featured many of the decorative arts, particularly the area of the tomb.
He added that the group passed through many restorations and additions in various eras, especially in the period of Abdul Rahman Katkhoda. The condition of the group deteriorated because of many reasons, foremost of which the elevation and decrease of the level of subterranean and surface water as a result of bad sanitary drainage.
