Subios 2014 – a time to discover the treasures beneath the waves in Seychelles

Almasalla, ATP News- Seychelles is not only blessed with a pristine greenery, white sandy beaches and clear seas. Beneath those waves lies an underwater world, which needs to be protected, appreciated and conserved for the future generations.

For almost a quarter of a century now, Seychelles has been putting a lot of emphasis on its marine world through a Festival of the Sea known as Subios.

The Festival of the Sea known as Subios is set to be a more vibrant one this year and a stepping stone for the one to be held next year when the event will mark its 25th anniversary.

A new way forward for his festival is being set by the Seychelles Tourism Board as its chief executive Sherin Naiken has said it is important to relook at the approaches being taken to boost up Subios.

Miss Naiken was speaking to members of the local press to reveal the activities which will be held as part of Subios 2014 from November 21- 23. Also present was Beryl Matatiken, the events and conferencing manager at the Seychelles Tourism Board.

She said this year, it has been agreed that the fraternity of divers locally should be more involved in the Festival of the Sea, so that they can showcase what they do and contribute toward making this event a successful one.

Subios 2014 will be officially launched at the Eden Bleu hotel at the Eden Island on November 21 by Minister Alain St.Ange, but during the day there will be several activities in hotels such as Four Seasons Resort and Hilton Seychelles Northolme Resort and Spa.

Four Seasons Resort Seychelles will be organising marine based activities such as snorkelling for a selected group of children. The event aims to foster links with the community and share with them marine knowledge and environmental work being undertaken by the resort.

Hilton Seychelles Northolme Resort and Spa will be hosting a seafood night at its Hilltop restaurant and a cocktail reception as well.

Miss Naiken said the tourism board has ensured that hotels take part in the events that it organises.

One of the main highlights of the festival will be the exhibition which will showcase their evolution of Subios since its conception.

Members of the public will be able to enjoy a variety of seafood dishes during a Subios bazar whereby those doing crafts work using raw materials from the sea will be there to exhibit and sell their products as well.

The seafood dishes will be judged and the winners will then be awarded.

Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resort and Spa will also be contributing this year’s Subios by having a chef ocean master class and seafood night.

The annual Subios triathlon has not been forgotten on this year’s programme while a newcomer is the Subios Big Splash Beach Party to be held at the popular Beau Vallon beach.

Double Tree by Hilton Seychelles Allamanda Resort and Spa will also be taking part in this year’s Subios by organising various activities on its premises.

The educational aspect of the festival has not been excluded as students have been called on to take part in poem, story writing and art work competitions organised as part of the Subios event.

Miss Naiken said it is important to involve our students in this festival for them to see vitality of our marine world, and of its protection and conservation.

She said during a recent meeting with divers, they have given their input on how to better the festival and this will surely will be incorporated in next year’s Subios as it will celebrate its 25th anniversary.
