aTP-  Arab tourism portal News – The South Australian Government has reached an in principle deal with China Southern Airlines for the first direct flights to be established from mainland China to Adelaide.

The final agreement is expected to be signed between the State Government and China Southern in Guangzhou later this week.

Direct passenger services between Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, and China (Hong Kong) are already available through Cathay Pacific.

South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill said he expected the China Southern flights to commence in December.

“Having a direct flight from mainland China will create jobs that extend well beyond Adelaide Airport – helping our tourism and hospitality sectors to take advantage of this growing market,” he said…

“The recent introduction of daily flights from Qatar Airways into Adelaide has also opened connections to more than 140 destinations including 25 European cities.”

The South Australian Government signed an initial agreement with China Southern Airlines in April with the aim to establish direct passenger services between the state’s capital Adelaide and Guangzhou from next year.

With a population of about 14 million, Guangzhou is the capital and largest city of Guangdong province in South China.

More than 32,000 Chinese visitors travelled to South Australia in the year to December 2015 – a rise of 4.7 per cent on the previous year.

Adelaide is also a popular education destination for Chinese students with about 12,000 choosing to study in South Australia in 2015.
